The flowers are so precious when blooming in such a rocky place. I wonder if the leaves appear when the bloom is over..... like our “higanbana”, or Cluster Amaryllis?
Yes, Yoko, the leaves appear later on in winter, very large ones. At that time the now harsh landscape is all green dotted with many colorful wildflowers. The leaves then dry up again in summer, until no trace of the plant is to be seen. Only the huge onion, deep in the earth waits for the days to become shorter, even before the first rains start, to bring up this remarkable flower, the messenger of rain. And yes, Lisa, we have snakes here, mainly vipers. Uri
